But with the lines of loyalty blurred, and Phoenix secrets to be kept, there’s no guarantee anyone can be trusted.
Logan Schmidt walks the blade of love and obligation—and just one slip may end them all.
After stealing the Phoenix dagger and going into hiding, the Hunters are convinced Logan is one of their own. But with Cara’s memories recovered, her heart is set on Logan’s return. The problem is, she may be the only one who trusts him.
It isn’t long until Logan’s disappearance is noticed by his long-time friend, Anton Botas, who is more than just an outsider. Though Logan trusts him, the Phoenixes do not, opening yet another fault line in their plans.
Where there is one, there are many.
Determined to end this once and for all, Cara and the others must destroy the Phoenix daggers—the only weapons able to kill her kind. But in a raging battle, Cara learns the awful truth about the relics. Destroying them may destroy the Phoenixes in the process.
Can Cara and her friends end this war, or is their future destined to go Up In Flames?
Up In Flames Excerpt
I’m dying to say something to Logan, to tell him to be careful, but I’m afraid he’ll take that as me not trusting him and give up on this whole idea. I force a smile and take a seat on the mini bleachers. My heart is racing like the wings of a hummingbird.
Logan won’t hurt him. He won’t.
Though I keep repeating the words in my head, I can’t stop picturing Logan’s face when he said he wanted to kill Garret and steal his essence so we’d have more time together. Are Logan’s feelings for me strong enough to make him do something like take a life? He’s already killed for me once. What’s to stop him now?
Me. I can stop him. “Be careful. Both of you. Remember, we need numbers on our side, so put whatever feud you have going on aside. Got it?”
God, I sound like Mom.
Garret doesn’t even acknowledge me, probably because he’s so tired of all of us telling him what to do. Even though he was never officially our group spokesperson or leader or whatever, he is definitely feeling the loss of authority lately.
Logan changes his grip on the dagger and nods to me. No. He wouldn’t hurt Garret because he knows I’d never forgive him if he stole his essence, even if he did do it for us. I lean forward, resting my elbows on my knees and nervously cracking my knuckles. I won’t be able to breathe again until this is over and they’re both okay.
Garret removes his police shirt and places it on the bleachers. I guess it would be hard to explain slashes if Logan manages to make contact with the dagger. Seeing Garret in a plain white t-shirt is weird. He’s always been a cop to me. I can’t remember ever seeing him out of uniform. He joins Logan in the center of the floor.
“I guess we should set some ground rules,” I say. “Such as?”
“How about no daggers to the heart?” I suggest with a nervous giggle.
Logan gives me a questioning look. “This was your idea, remember? Either you want me to train with the dagger or you don’t.”
“I trust you,” I say. “Just be careful. Accidents happen, and I don’t want to have to test how strong my healing abilities are right now.”
“Your faith in my fighting skills is so reassuring, Cara,” Garret says. “Logan has to get close enough to me to use that thing, and I’m not going to make that easy for him to do.”
“Don’t make me come over there and wipe that smirk off your face, Garret.” If he thinks I’m going to sit back and watch him burn Logan he has another thing coming. Like a fireball to his head.
“Can we get this over with already?” Logan asks, crouching into a ready stance.
Garret smirks one last time and starts circling Logan. “Still feel like yourself after holding that thing for a while?” he asks.
“Don’t worry about me.” Logan cocks his head to the side. “Or are you worried about yourself?”
Garret throws a fireball at Logan’s chest. I jump up and scream, “Hey!”
Logan dodges and swings the dagger at Garret. He makes contact with Garret’s left arm, slicing a line down his tricep. Garret cries out in pain and responds by hurling another fireball at Logan. The flames graze Logan’s forearm before hurtling into the wall. This is insane. They’re going at it like they want to kill each other, not like they are practicing.
“Stop!” I yell, rushing over to them. Garret doesn’t listen. He can’t even move his left arm after Logan cut it with the dagger, but he’s not a lefty and he’s already throwing another fireball at Logan. This one singes the bottom of Logan’s shorts, which he has to pat down to stifle the flames.
Logan goes right at Garret this time, staying low to the ground and bobbing from side to side to avoid any of Garret’s attacks. I run right between them, which is the stupidest thing ever, but if I don’t stop them, one or both of them will wind up dead. I’m not sure Logan can see it’s me standing in front of him. His hand thrusts forward, nearly cutting me with the tip of the dagger. At the last second, he swipes his free arm in an arching motion and tackles me to the ground. I hit it and feel Logan’s body drop down on me. Then something sharp touches my chest. I look down to see the dagger.
Logan’s eyes have a glazed over look. He shakes his head and says, “And this is why I won’t fight you.” He gets up and storms out of the building.
I rest my head back against the gym floor, breathing heavily. The guy I love just pinned me to the floor and held the dagger over my heart.

Into the Fire Trilogy Dream Cast
I’m so bad at deciding dream casts because I always have an image in mind for my characters and matching that to actors is tough! But I think the cast I’ve come up with does Cara and the gang justice.
Cara Tillman ~ Dove Cameron
Dove would need some fiery red streaks in her hair and sapphire blue contacts, but I think she could pull off the many sides of Cara Tillman. She did a great job in Disney’s Descendants playing both the tough girl and the sensitive type.
Logan Schmidt ~ Spencer Boldman
Okay, so Spencer Boldman played a very comedic character on Lab Rats, but I’ve seen him play serious roles too and he’s actually better at those, so I think he could pull off the tough Logan Schmidt, who is mourning the loss of several people in his life and struggling to come to terms with who he is.
Rachel (Cara’s best friend) ~ Maia Mitchell
Maia is another one who can play different roles. Rachel is spunky and has these comments that make you laugh out loud because they’re so blunt. She’ll also do anything for the people she cares about. I think Maia could play that role well.
Jeremy Tillman (Cara’s brother) ~ Cody Christian
You might recognize Cody from Pretty Little Liars, one of my favorite shows! He plays Mike Montgomery, and if you follow the show, you know he is able to pull off so many different roles. He’d make a great Jeremy. I originally picked him for Nick in Into the Fire, but he’d definitely make a better Jeremy. He’d need to dye his hair of course. 😉
So there’s my dream cast. Do you know these actors?
