H.A.L.F. 9 has taken his first breath of desert air and his first steps in the human world. Created to be a weapon, he proved too powerful for his makers and has lived a sedated life hidden from humans. But H.A.L.F. 9 has escaped the underground lab he called home, and the sedation has worn off. He has never been more alive. More powerful. Or more deadly.
Erika Holt longs to ride her motorcycle east until pavement meets shore. She bides her time until graduation when she’ll say adios to the trailer she shares with her alcoholic mother and memories of her dead father. But a typical night in the desert with friends thrusts Erika into a situation more dangerous than she ever imagined.
Circumstances push the two together, and each must make a fateful choice. Will Erika help H.A.L.F. 9 despite her “don’t get involved” rule? And will H.A.L.F. 9 let Erika live even though he was trained to kill?
The two may need to forget their rules and training and if either is to survive the dangers of the deep beneath them.
I really have to clear my mind when I start reading anything that is in the science fiction arena. The summary of this book caught my attention and honestly I got more than what I was expecting. Let me just start by saying that this novel is an extremely quick read. The author has done a wonderful job of creating such realistic characters and story setting, still with the elements of science fiction undertones throughout. It won’t take you long to finish it. Find your favorite reading spot, and just dive in. The novel opens quickly with a little prologue that is always great to have. It gives the reader some in depth information about how things all started and boy does the author give us some details. I’m that super traditional reader, so I’ll throw this out there, I found this book to be a mature YA read within the first few chapters. However, the initial events that occur between the 4 teenagers are just the beginning of so much more to come.
There are a lot of decisions to be made. Some that could even mean between life or death. Ericka is faced with the knowledge that there are others. Others that are like her on the surface only, however much unlike her as a whole. When faced with meeting this unknown stranger, and the help he initially provides in a horrifying situation. Ericka is faced with her confusion and uncertainties about H.A.L.F. 9. There are hints of attraction between the two throughout, however this novel truly focuses on the storyline and overall plot. Both are trying to get away from a gloomy life. However, doing this together is going to be the challenge. Sometimes the mind tells you something different than the heart. There are agendas all around them. Agendas that just may even cause for death or the possible elimination of one of them. Be warned, book 2 is on the horizon for a reason and when you get to those very last moments of twists and turns you’ll yearn for the book to already be in your hands. Ericka and H.A.L.F. 9 have a huge story to tell. A huge story to follow. Who will ultimately be the one to tell the next chapter?
