This is not the first book that I’ve read by author Donna McDine. Her creativeness to storylines is truly impressive. This little book is packed with lots of details and action, however I’m not sure of the appropriateness of the younger age. I gave the book to my 10 year old son to read and when I was ready to have a discussion about what he liked or disliked, he said he liked the illustrations. Upon reading the story, I now know why he didn’t elaborate much. There are a few events in the story that would need some more clarification in explaining the context. Some word choices are also very upper level. Tommy’s story of being captured and working at sea as a young boy is an interesting and fast historical read.
