Raised in a hostile environment where abuse occurs daily, David attempts to break the mold and befriends the slave, Jenkins, owned by his Pa. Fighting against extraordinary times and beliefs, David leads Jenkins to freedom with no regard for his own safety and possible consequences dealt out by his Pa. Suggested age for readers: 8-12

The Golden Pathway

A topic that is usually introduced in the 3rd grade, The Golden Pathway is a nice addition to historical literature on the subject of the slavery.  The main character knows that slavery is wrong and secretly helps a slave.  Although suggested for age 8 and up,  I think there are a couple of scenes that an 8 year old will need some guidance and/or clarification in understanding, but overall an informative historical read.
